We are partnering with a large, global organisation operating within a complex, high-volume retail environment to appoint a General Manager – People & Culture for their Australian business.
This is a critical leadership role, sitting at the intersection of operations, compliance and culture—requiring a commercially minded HR leader who can operate with maturity, independence and influence in a dynamic and, at times, challenging environment.
The Opportunity
This is not a “build from greenfield” or purely strategic HR role. Instead, it’s a hands-on, operational leadership position where your ability to bring structure, stability and sound judgement will be key.
You will lead the end-to-end HR function locally, acting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while navigating a culturally diverse and compliance-focused business. There is significant opportunity to shape how HR supports the organisation moving forward—particularly through strengthening processes, lifting capability, and ensuring best-practice alignment with Australian employment frameworks.

Package

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a small HR team across all areas of the employee life cycle.
- Provide senior, pragmatic advice to the leadership team on all people-related matters
- Drive compliance with Australian employment legislation and manage complex ER matters
- Oversee workplace health & safety programs and obligations
- Implement and improve HR processes, systems and reporting
- Partner closely with senior stakeholders to understand and support operational priorities
- Lead key HR projects focused on stabilisation, capability uplift and process improvement
You are an experienced HR leader who is comfortable operating in environments that require resilience, patience and strong judgement.
You bring:
- Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role within a complex, operational business
- Deep knowledge of Australian employment law and best practice HR
- The ability to influence and guide senior stakeholders, often without formal authority
- A pragmatic, process-oriented approach with strong attention to detail
- Comfort working in culturally diverse environments and navigating different leadership styles
- A hands-on mindset—someone who leads from the front rather than from a distance
- A willingness to be in the office full-time although consideration will also be given to candidates seeking to work 4 days a week.
